AN INTIMATE MICHIGAN BACKYARD WEDDING
As a documentary-style wedding photographer, I often find myself captivated by the unique stories couples bring to their big day. Recently, I had the pleasure of capturing a truly special wedding in a backyard in Southern Michigan. This beautiful property, complete with a charming white barn and sprawling 23 acres of nature, set the perfect stage for an outdoor intimate wedding.
Initially, Kelly + Travis hadn’t planned on marriage. For them, the joy and commitment they shared were more than enough. However, a recent move from Colorado back to Michigan and the purchase of their stunning property inspired a change of heart. They wanted to celebrate their love in a way that felt true to who they are—outdoorsy, laid-back, and deeply connected to their roots.
Surrounded by 40 of their closest friends and family, the couple said I do by trees outside their white barn. One of the most unique aspects of their ceremony was a heartfelt ritual involving the guests. They invited everyone to bring soil from a place that holds special meaning to them. Upon arrival, each guest wrote on the back of a card where their soil was from and what that place meant to them. This thoughtful gesture turned their ceremony into a beautiful tapestry of connections and stories.
As the ceremony progressed, guests were invited to bring their soil up to the couple. The cards were then displayed alongside the soil, creating a stunning visual piece that represented not only the couple’s love but also the love and support of their community. Each card contributed to a large photo of their property, symbolizing how their home was woven together with the stories of those they cherish.
Afterward, guests gathered for a long table dinner, a nod to their vision of community and togetherness. Inspired by the quote, “If you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence,” the couple created a warm, inviting atmosphere that reflected their values of kindness and generosity.
As I captured moments of the couple barefoot in the grass, enjoying the bonfire and sharing stories over good food, it became clear that this wedding was more than just a celebration—it was a beautiful reflection of their life together. The couple’s love for gardening, cooking, and outdoor adventures truly shone through, making their special day one to remember.
Travis and Kelly are not just starting a new chapter in their lives as a married couple; they’re also laying the groundwork for a future business that embodies their vision of community – called Longer Table Acres.
